Celebrating the Victory of Prop 36:

A Win for Justice and Safety in California

On November 5, 2024, Californians made their voices heard by overwhelmingly passing Proposition 36, the Homelessness, Drug Addiction, and Theft Reduction Act. This landmark measure marks a significant turning point in the fight against rising crime, drug addiction, and retail theft across the state. At Crime Victims United, we are proud to have championed this initiative, standing alongside countless advocates and organizations committed to ensuring a safer California for all.

A Step Forward for Accountability and Safety:

Proposition 36 addresses the growing concerns of Californians regarding drug abuse, organized retail theft, and the lack of accountability for repeat offenders. By reclassifying certain crimes and increasing penalties for serial offenders, the measure restores a much-needed balance to the justice system.

The new law also includes a critical focus on rehabilitation. With mandatory drug treatment programs for individuals convicted of possessing dangerous substances like fentanyl and methamphetamines, Prop 36 ensures that offenders receive the help they need while protecting the public from harm. This dual approach of accountability and rehabilitation is a model for effective criminal justice reform.

Crime Victims United: Advocating for Change:

Crime Victims United has long been a voice for those impacted by crime. We believe that every Californian deserves to live in a community free from fear. That’s why we proudly supported Prop 36 from the beginning.

We knew this measure was not just about enacting tougher penalties but about addressing the root causes of crime. By ensuring that repeat offenders are held accountable while offering pathways to recovery for those struggling with addiction, Prop 36 provides a holistic solution to some of California’s most pressing issues.

The Road Ahead:

While the passage of Prop 36 is a significant victory, our work is far from over. Crime Victims United will continue to monitor the implementation of this measure to ensure its effectiveness. We will also advocate for continued investment in rehabilitation programs and resources for victims of crime.

We understand that true safety requires a comprehensive approach. That’s why we remain committed to addressing the root causes of crime, supporting victims, and promoting policies that prioritize public safety and accountability.
